How Do You Get Your Kids To Post

Many people ask me the question that how do I get my children to pose for me. Well, I bribe. Sometimes heavily. Weather was perfect this weekend. I asked the girls to take some pictures.. and I offered to let them pick their candies at the Disney. Lesson #1, should have size limit.

Kelly is a nature whenever posing for pictures. Only thing is she always picks out her own cloths. On this day, she had her heart set on this black sweater and I couldn't talk her out of it.

She is holding her picture card. Disney photographer wanted to take some pictures of her even after I told her we probably wouldn't buy her pictures.. she just want to take pictures. I totally understand.

My Florida friends will know that we made a stop at the Polynesian Resort.. The yellow flowers add a welcome touch to the picture.

The bumpy bridge is really cool.. I don't even remember how many times they want through the bridge. Disney was packed with people the weekend. Tom Sewer's Island is a perfect place to be.. much quieter and less crowded.

Sunday Snapshot - Better Pictures

I love photography. Normally I don't get my kids dress up for a photo shoot. Actually, I have never done that. Most of pictures are taken in outdoor nature light.. and lots times they don't have the perfect hair or dress, I love to capture the moment. Same way with the processing. I don't always have the most clear picture because most times they are captured in a real quick motion.

Today.. I wanted something different. I want to focus on technical aspects of the pictures. I want them crispy clear if all possible, and I was patient and slow.

We went to hang out at the Winter Park.. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon. There were many people had the same idea like us.

Favorite Photo Friday - Kelly On The Move

Beginning this year, due to Florida class size enforcement, Kelly got blocked out from our zoned school because we were in the North. When we came back, we were simply told there was no room available at her school. So, she was assigned to a different school.

It was not an ideal situation. She was away from all her friends and in a different school than her sister. But she handled it beautifully. Made new friends.. Only thing was that the academic standards are different. So, we decided to work on getting her back to her zoned school.

It was not an easy task.. When we heard there were transfers at her old school, we immediately jumped on it. We talked with the school and we talked with the county. We decided the best way to handle this is to ask for a face to face meeting and it worked. For two days, we sat at the county office waiting for someone that can discuss our situation. School is open now, but only to new students. We didn't give up.. Finally, they made an exception for Kelly. Starting this week, she is back to her old school.. with her old friends.. and she is very happy.

In one week, she has taken seven advanced reading tests compare to one in the past few month. She is back to her gifted class with her friends and she has to study hard to compete with them. She rides school bus with her sister everyday that makes Allison so happy.

Now, we just need to decide if she is going to a private school or stay with the public school system next year. This weekend we are going to visit a Catholic school to review their curriculum. Kelly is a very bright kid, but needs more challenges. We are hoping that she will be able to stay with the public school with all her friends. Time will tell. We only want the best for her.

It is hard to complain when it is sunny and 78 degree while many other places covered by snow and ice. This is the best of the year for Florida.

On this beautiful Sunday..we started with at our favorite restaurant for breakfast and a swim.

A Beautiful Sunny Day

Today is the kind of the weather that reminds us why we love to be in Florida right now. Kids are out of school today. We met up with some friends for a play date at the Springs. The sun was warm. Weather was cool. Kids all had a great time.

Allison played with her friends from school.. it took her 30 minutes to relax and be herself. Still a very shy girl.

She will not go into the water because it is too cold.. 72 degree all year long. Kids from Maine will call it normal.

Somehow her friends talked her into jump into the pool which was even colder..

Those are all her friends from last year.. she misses them. We are working on to get her back there soon.

It is truly a blessing that the kids can just walk on the beach in their swimming suit in January!

Winter Break In Pictures - Snow Fight

It wouldn't be any snow fun if without a snow fight. We are having an unusually warm winter in Maine. It did snow, but not cold enough to keep it coming.. Instead, it turned into ice on some days. It happened that I needed to go out in one of those icy morning. I didn't know the road was icy until I hit the hills. At the bottom of a deep hill, I decided it was time for me to stop because I just don't know how to get my car up the hill.. So, what did I do, I called 911. The police came to rescue me and got me home. When I told my story to my friends in Maine at a party, they all laughed so hard. Then I realize you don't call the police when you stuck on ice, you call AAA. But, we did have some days with enough snow to start a fight.. This is one of my favorite winter snow fight picture. Daddy is throwing snow ball at my camera.

I finally talked Allison into action. She doesn't like to touch the snow.

Winter Break In Pictures - Hiking

This is the time I wish I am a better writer to share our experience. Some people think we are crazy of doing this.. For lot people, when snow falls, it is better to sit by the fire with a hot coca. For us, it is to put on your best snow boots, snow jacket, hats, gloves.. and heading out for a hike. The trail will be empty, the air will be fresh.. you feel free and lost in the nature.. ocean.. and snow. We often look at the each other.. and say.."This is what we miss when we are in Florida."

If you are Kelly, you make sure everything matches from head to toe. She is going with pink. She needs to make sure she looks good even when no one is looking.

And, if you are Allison, you will ignore your parents words, put on your new shoes because they are so pretty.. and left your best snow boots at home..and you complain about how cold your feet are.

My hands are colder than yours.. because I forgot my gloves.. but my feet are warmer.

And Kelly always wants to go off the trail.. Doesn't like to go the easy way.

Part of the hiking fun is to walk on logs.. doesn't matter snow or not.

More snow.. yeahhh..

OK. I am going on the ice.. I think it is frozen. If not, well, I don't really care.

Rising Kelly ...

I have always thought that I could write a book about Kelly.. She is one special kid. We knew that from the first time we saw her. My mom went to visit her before we went to China and she told us the little stories about Kelly, how she was always the first one to run out of the room in her walker when the door open, how she knew how to get the director attention whenever he came to visit the room..

Then we saw Kelly in Hunan. she couldn't sit, she couldn't stand.. She loves daddy, but not mommy who is Chinese. We could never figure that out. She would not let daddy out of her sight, and she would not let mommy get close to her. Then it was all changed in one day.. We went to have lunch with orphanage director and his staff.. Kelly came to the restaurant in daddy's arm.. her eyes went wild open when she saw the director.. and especially when she saw the director talked with mommy (not daddy) and sat next to mommy (not daddy).. she became warm to mommy. At that point, Kelly decided mommy is OK. I will never forget that meal. She looked at me and smiled at me for the first time..

She never learned how to walk..or how to crawl. One day when me and her nanny were talking in the living room.. Kelly decided she could walk/run from one sofa to anther.. and she did. That was it. She started to run. Notice I said she started to run.. she never walked. As soon as she knows how to move without assistance, she started to run.

Here is my beautiful daughter Kelly today..

You know I sat here wanted to write something about her.. and I suddenly realize there are so much I can say about her and I can't really write in one blog. She is one special kid that's all I can say. I know somewhere in Hunan, there is one special lady thinking about this beautiful baby she had to let go.. and I wish there is a way I could let her know this special baby is growing into a confident young lady.. I am going to make sure she achieves to her full potential! I can't believe she is 8 years old already.

Tonight, I promised her that I would get her a phone when she is 10. She looked at us with this smart look on her face.. and said.. "Mom, I am 10 now.. where is my phone." Oh boy.. Could I stop her from growing so fast..

She is funny, goofy, mischief sometimes.. I took the picture and realize half of her eyebrows was missing.. so I asked her. She gave me this mischief smile and said .."I shaved it with daddy's shaver."

Winter Break In Pictures - The Beach

Like I mentioned, we had a long winter break. We took the girls out of school a week early to leave for Maine.. we want to experience the winter in Maine and we sure got a good taste of it. There were not much snow as we had hoped, and it was not as cold as we thought. But it was enough snow and cold for us.

No matter how cold it is.. there is not way you can convince this girl to put on a pair of pants.. It has to look good on her.

Going down to the beach can be tricky because the ice and snow..

Sunday Snapshot - Sunny Florida

It feels great to be back to sunny Florida.. where the air is cool and sun is warm. I miss the ocean and beautiful sunrise in the morning. But there is no place better than Florida in January if you are not into winter sports. We spent two days to get back to normal schedule after three weeks vacation. Of course, we all under the weather a little bit, but wanted to out and enjoy the sun..

My beautiful 8 years old. She loves to tell people she is 8 now.. only when you are young you wish everyone knows your age.

What a difference! Instead of heavy winter coat, she is walking in the rose garden in her tank top.

Roses are at their best right now.. Leu Garden is one of our favorite place to hang out.

Well, seem like I have been MIA. The truth is that I feel like I have run out things to blog about. Kids still are adorable. But, just how many times you can blog about how adorable your kids are. So, I am thinking to turn this blog into a family blog since it has been a family blog for a long time.

Time goes by really fast. When we purchased our summer home many years ago before we had children, we thought about what we have to deal with when we have kids and school. But, that it was too far away. We talked about it, but we really didn’t think seriously about it. Now, nine years later, we are at a point need to make decisions about our home in Maine. It is a difficult time of our country and our public school system. It doesn’t matter if you are zoned for a particular school, if you don’t show up the first day of the school, there are many people waiting in line to take it. And, we have an extremely intelligent child who has an extremely exquisite mind that we can’t just ignore, we need to send her to school on the very first day.. not three month later that she may get randomly assigned to any school in the area.

So, this winter is about if we want to live in the North or South. We want to try see if we can survive the winter in the north. We left early for Maine in December and spent our Christmas and New Years there. It was a wonderful trip with many fun memories like any other trips we made. This one is particular special since we are thinking to live full time in Maine. We hiked, visited relatives, road trips, watched sunrise and sunset..

In the end, winter in Maine maybe too much for our warm flood Florida people.. :)

I didn't take my fancy camera to Maine knowing I would be in snow and ice. But my Olympus ep1 and Panasonic LX3 did an excellent job.. I will post some spectacular winter wonderland in the next couple days..

Sunday Snapshot - Christmas Is Coming

Can you believe it Christmas is just around the corner? It has been quite a year.. Things are going back on track now. But when I look back, I see that our family events are reflecting what's going on in our country. It is also reinforced my believe in hard work and Education. We decided to spend Christmas in Maine this year. Kids school is getting more complicated. It doesn't look like we can spend whole summer in Maine because the school schedule. We need to make a decision if we want to sell the house, rent the house, or move to Maine. So, we are going to Maine for a whole month just to see if we can make it.. silly, right? But, this weekend is our last weekend here before the holidays, we went to Disney.. surprised..:)

It is always beautiful just visit any Disney resort, sit by the pool, enjoy the sun..

Can you believe I watched "beauty and beast" three times already..

Watching American Idol is fun.. We have to help pick a winner that may be the next American Idol.

Sunday Snapshot - Holidays and Parties

I love this time of the year.. It is beautiful everywhere you go. Kids are all excited about Santa and pretty dresses. This Sunday, we had a full day between the park a build a bear birthday party. If you ask Allison, it is best day of her life.

Disney Hollywood Studio Christmas light show was a big hit with us.. and we even saw some fake snow.

I want a picture with my sister, who is at the moment admiring "Hollywood Tower"..

Happy holidays.. hoping for lots presents.

Disney Boardwalk is one of our favorite hang out place.. it is always beautifully decorated, not to mention an easy walk to Epcot.

In the afternoon, Allison went to her friend's birthday's party at Build a Bear workshop. It is a wonderful pricy place. At the end, even I had to admit just to look at the look on Allison's face makes all worth it.

Oh.. Savannah

On the way back from Williamsburg, we wanted to find a nice sport for a break, it was not hard to pick Savannah. We have always loved Savannah, a beautiful charming town with historical mansions and architectural beauty. We visited Savannah few years ago and had the most wonderful time strolling the historical district.. felt like step back in time. We walked along the main street, enjoyed the beauty of the Spanish Moss, the incredible Victorian buildings, passed many parks and squares, and their monuments to Savannah’s rich history.

Watching the girls playing under the Savannah warm sun, we can't help but to think how wonderful people are, how relax and peaceful it is here. Everyone was smiling, kids were playing, or ladies were chatting. You feel the southern charm here.

This is Savannah. A city that you can spend any afternoon in the rocking chair on the front porch, sipping sweet tea, chatting with anyone passing by.. it is a wonderful life.

Favorite Photo Friday - She Made The Honor Roll

This is a cell phone picture taken in a really bad light. But I am so proud of her.. I had to put it on the blog. She came home today and told me.. "Mom, let me show you something.. Look, the principle came to our class and gave me this." Somehow, she always managed to surprise me. For a child hardly studies at home, she did it again.

I came from a culture that believes in hard work. Like million Chinese kids in China right now, I studied day and night.. I worked really hard at school. I am being rewarded for my hard work. That's why I want the same for my children. Somehow, it hasn't been working for Kelly. A exceptionally smart child that doesn't like to study. But, she has huge curiosity for the world around her.. She wants to know "why" to everything. Daddy loves that about her and encourages her everyday to be an independent thinker. Kelly hardly studies at home, but somehow often came home with "A". One time she came home with a "B" and told me "Mom, remember, I did my best". I told her there are only two grades in our house, "A" or "F". That may sound tough, but that's how I learned growing up.

My thinking is starting to shake a little bit. Maybe there is a different way of being successful. Daddy thinks being successful is to live a meaningful and happy life. I came from a culture believes in achieving highest you can achieve. That's why my little sister is working on defending her doctoral dissertation at a medical school after two successful master degrees in highly competitive fields. Because like our parents always ask us, is that the best you can do?

I look at this kid.. she is smart and beautiful. Her chess coach said she is one of the most confident new students at the club.. After learning all the basic moves, she started to win matches. Confident.. maybe that's it. As long as she is confident, she has the ability to be successful. Either way, We are very proud of her!

Thanksgiving Adventure

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is the time of the year you get together with family and friends, to count your blessings, without distractions of gifts. I think a lot times a holiday becomes so commercialized that we often forget what we are celebrating. This year, Thanksgiving is also daddy's birthday so we asked daddy what does he like to do. He wants a road trip.. I never say no to any road trips.. So, this year on Thanksgiving, we are on the road..

Girls and I spent couple days at Williamsburg this summer and we had a great time. I thought this will be a special place for daddy to come to visit since he is really into history. Daddy loved idea. So, we packed the kids in the car headed to north yesterday morning. It took us 13 hours to get to Williamsburg from Florida. Kids did wonderfully. The trip was long but very smooth.

Our first stop was historical Jamestown. If you are wondering how come there is no one else in the picture but us, that's because this part of the park is closed on Thanksgiving. But it didn't stop us from taking a walk along the river and visited different site.

It doesn't take much to make kids happy. Allison couldn't believe how many rocks she can collect from the site...

Our next stop was Jamestown Settlement. Three days a year, they have food and feasts of colonial Virginia. You learn how food was gathered, preserved and prepared on land and at sea by Virginia’s English colonists and Powhatan Indians. It was a fascinating experience.. I can't show you what they are seeing here.. it was pretty tough scene for me.

Kelly didn't want to miss anything.. We have to drag her away from every station.

We spent a lot time on the model ships.. Daddy had thousands questions. We are really happy to see he is enjoying the trip.

We had our Thanksgiving dinner at the Jamestown. When asked what should we be thankful for.. Kelly said.. "I am thankful for my family." That sums it all up.

Favorite Photo Friday - Cesky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov is a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, best known for the fine architecture and art of the historic old town and Cesky Krumlov Castle. And, most importantly, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

While visiting Prague last summer, my friend and I decided to escape the busy city and spent a day at Cesky Krumlov. Instead of organized tour, we hopped on a local bus. The bus driver didn't speak English, which is quite normal in Prague, but everyone knows Cesky Krumlov. After stopping at many equally charming small villages, we arrived at this magnificent city. This is the first time I regretted that I should have brought my super wide lens. Then, on the other hand, there is no lens wide enough to capture the beauty of this city.

Cesky Krumlov castle is very large for a small city like Cesky Krumlov. There are gardens, bridges, and many caves that were used for art shows.

You can walk in any river side restaurants and have a wonderful meal without breaking your wallet.

We walked and walked many streets and the city never ceased to amaze us with its charm and beauty.

Back To Gymnastics

She is a happy girl today. After school, I took her back to her old gym, and put her back to her favorite coach, Mr. David class. Allison is a late boomer. When Kelly was four, she could do all kind of tricks and climb trees. Allison, on the other hand, didn't do anything too physical until this year. She loves to climb now. She has been practicing her gymnastic moves everyday. Not very successful, but keep trying. She will be at the beginner's class with Mr. David. She is also looking forward to the icee after class and plan to buy them with her own money. Both girls are earning allowance now.. for $3 a week, they are cleaning the living room everyday. I know for sure Allison will not forget her chore everyday.

Kelly Is Wearing Pants

This may sound strange to most people, but I am so excited that Kelly finally agreed to let me buy a pair of pants for her. She doesn't own pants.. no shorts.. When it is cold, she wears leggins. She is a very very active kid so none of her leggins can last long, and they are not cheap. Whenever I ask her to wear pants, she always say.."I don't wear pants, I don't look good in them."

I thought getting a pair of pants is easy.. turns out, she has such slim body type, none of the pants we tried fit her. Her waist is a size 5, length is 7/8. We finally found this purple slim pants.. it is really slim but comfortable.

Most people try their new clothes in front of a mirror. Kelly tried her new pants, first one in four years, by climbing a tree. Later concluded.. "I think I like wearing this. It feels great climbing the tree"

Sunday Snapshot - Another Day At The Park

Sometimes it is really hard to resist Disney. The park is right there.. When the weather is nice like today, and you want to go somewhere, we often found ourselves ended up at Disney. It is, after all, the happiest place on earth.

We got to the park early.. so the line was not long. After Peter Pan Flight, we did carousel ride twice before jumping into the tea cup. It was a crazy ride.

We have gone to Fantasy Land every time we are at Magic Kingdom. This time, we decided to spend most time at Tomorrow Land.. which is equally amazing.

Not sure what they are doing, but sure looks fun.

Allison wanted to take pictures. I gave her my ep1. Kelly was determined not to let her sister get the best picture of her.. I still think it is a good picture. OK. It is a better picture of me than her. What can I say, I don't get a good picture too often. She gets them almost every time.

Sunday Snapshot - A Houseboat Getaway

This weekend, we joined our family friends McCalls for a long waited two days houseboat cruise along the St. John river. Here is Captain Allen.

The Day of Halloween

This Halloween Allison had a chance of heart. She didn't want to go out trick or treat, she doesn't like all the costumes because they scare her. So, she decided to stay with mommy at home giving out candies. Well, mommy gave out candies while Allison hide behind the sofa.

I joined Allison for her class Halloween party.. kids made cookies and played games.

Allison and her teacher, Ms. Andary. Allison is very lucky to have Ms. Andary as her first year teacher. She is kind, friendly, and very good to kids. All the kids adore her.

Allison plays teacher. She loves to play school, love to read to other kids. Her friend, Ashley is happily playing along with her.

She did manage to get candies from the boys cross the street. That's as close to trick or treat she got this year.

Kelly, on the other hand, couldn't wait till Halloween. She wanted to be a vampire.. a pretty vampire. We bought her cape few weeks ago and she has been practicing her vampire move every day.. Daddy is Jonny Deep.

Anyone came to our house on Halloween had to pass this creature.

Kelly had everything she needed to be a vampire, but at the last minute, she decided that she doesn't look good with those fake teeth.. and cape is too long..

In the end, instead of a vampire, she looks like a princess going to a Christmas party. But, most importantly, they both had fun. Kelly was out whole night with daddy, crashed couple parties, and brought lots of new friends back to our house to get candies. Allison, did a lot trick or treat at home. Hopefully she will be Ok next year to join her sister.

Sunday Snapshot - A Sunday Around The Town

Sunday starts with a chess match. Kelly started chess last week and she loves it. I have never thought Allison would be interested in chess either, but she did. So, Kelly taught her the basic moves and they had a match. I think we may have found a family game.

Then we headed to a local farmer's market at a park to enjoy some fresh veges and orchids..

Kelly asked me to take some photos last night when we were visiting New Smyrna Beach. I couldn't help but notice how mature she looks.. If you ask her how old she is now, the answer will be 7.8. Really.. where did time go?

She asks me almost everyday.."Mom, do you love me?" And, I always say "Yes, all the way to the Sun and the Moon and back.." Last night, she asked me again.. I said "Yes, all the way to the Sun and moon and go around around million times.. and back." She asked.."How about not coming back?" I said "Only if you come with me."

This beautiful young lady excels at everything she does.. She just started chess this week. When I went to her class to pick her up. I saw she was in a match with a boy. I asked the coach.."This is just her first class, shouldn't she learn more about moves and strategies before going to a match?" The coach said she picked up all the moves quickly.. and she wants a match. Yes. That's Kelly.

A Unique Florida Event

If you want to find interesting things to do in Central Florida, you have to go out of the Disneyland. This week, many professional landscape artists will paint in the open air at New Smyrna Beach.. Kelly has shown a lot interests in painting lately, so we thought it would be fun to head there for a night out at New Smyrna Beach. It turned out to be a really fun evening.. we had dinner at a water front restaurant, watched

A Girl Goes Wild

She has always been the sweet one, quiet one, and scared one. A perfect child. Always on her best behavior. We didn't have a terrible two with her.. no problem at three.. perfect four. But somehow, she suddenly changed this year. Maybe school did it.

Still sweet.. but no rules anymore. Especially when comes to her sister. She loves to do anything just to annoy her.

Physically she is more capable.. there is no fear to anything for her right now.. tree, wall, sofa, bed, anything that she can jump on.

When she was small, we used to concern that she couldn't talk well. Now, she talks laughs talks laughs.. And she does it loudly. When she cries, she cries loud. When she laughs out loudly. When she wants something, the whole neighborhood can hear her.

I can't wait to see what is she going to be like next year..

A Lazy Day At Mt. Dora and Old Florida

This weekend the streets in Mt. Dora packed with more than 350 talented crafters & artists from all over the country for a two days event. We have never been to this festival. But, since the weather was perfect and Mt.Dora was perfect place to visit, we decided to spend the day there just to hang out.

Festival food.. Kelly is not very adventure with food.. After serving all the selections, she had a hotdog.

Sunday Snapshot - Happy's Day

This little guy's name is "Happy". He is Allison's classroom pet. He came home with her on Friday to spend the weekend with our family. Allison takes the task seriously and determined to let Happy have a fun weekend.

We went to Mt. Dora today for the the famous Mount Dora Craft Festival. Of course Happy had to come with her..

It is a beautiful sunny day.. Warm sun and cool air. Both Allison and Happy are enjoying the day.

Around The World In Disney

One good thing about living in Orlando is you got to go to Disney anytime you want. It is not cheap, but you can't really put a price tag on the happiest place on earth.. can you? With a pass to all parks, we have always gone to Epcot because it is daddy's favorite park.

Everyone has their favorite thing to do at Epcot. For Kelly, it is save the world. She already saved England, Norway, Canada, and China. Today, she is going to save France. "Who is going to be in charge of the mission?" "Kelly.. Kelly" Allison is not the one who is willing to save anyone.

And, Kelly takes her task seriously.. In the end, she saved the France. Sometimes we wonder is Kelly has ADHD because she hardly sits down. But, in the situation like this that requires concentration and persistence.. She does it beautifully.

For Allison, the favorite thing to do is the "Big Ball".. Sometimes that's the only thing she wants to do.

Mommy loves Mexico for this.. Can you blame me?

We also love to walk around the lake to visit different countries. I have been to all of the countries except Norway during my travel years.. it is not the same, but it does bring back some wonderful memories. Actually my fascination with Europe started at Epcot. The first time I came to Epcot, I remember thinking it would be wonderful if one day I could go visit those countries in person.. and I did. Just like they say here in Disney.. "Dreams do come true."

Here is my favorite city, Paris. The city I have visited so many times. I miss Paris. I told Kelly that one day mommy is going to take her to visit this beautiful city.. Her answer.."Why is it beautiful?" You really can't tell from looking at a model.

St Mark's Square in Venice. My English is good enough to describe how beautiful and grant the Piazzetta di San Marco is. I remembered I was so in awe of everything I saw there in one sunny afternoon.. and the rich Italy food with few glasses of wine made me fall sleep on the gondola later.

There is Japan.. A mastery county with rich history and most hard working people I have ever seen. I never felt familiar when I was living in Japan even thorough most people thought I am Japanese.

And.. all the other countries. Only Disney can bring them so close to people. I image how many young people visiting Epcot thinking the same thing like I did many years ago during my first trip.. and yes, dreams do come true. Just need to work on them.

Look.. a real cranberry patch right in the middle of the park. Only in Disney.

Let's not forget Allison's favorite friend.. A cat in costume. Allison has always been afraid of characters in costume, but not this one. She loves this one.. Even tells her daddy.."There is nothing to be afraid of her, she is not real."

Sunday Snapshot - Just Another Day At A Park

My camera has been sitting on the shelf collecting dust because I don't have time to take pictures or process pictures. When I woke up this morning to a perfect photography weather.. I decided to drop everything and go take some pictures of the girls.

Daddy decided to take the family to a dog park for couple hours first. It is an unique park by the lake, famous for dogs jump into the lake and play freely there. Well, needless to say, it is not a thing for me and Allison. Kelly, on the other hand, had a time of her life. She hugged and played with at least 50 dogs and daddy had to drag her out when the time to leave.

Allison and I went to a nearby park to take pictures.. and since the weather was perfect, almost all pictures are perfect.

Later we went to Winter Park to have lunch and a stroll. Kelly played with more dogs. She asked about 50 times when is she going to get a dog.. "When you can take care a dog." We have had that discussion so many times. She will love to have a dog more than anything else, but with mommy and daddy both working, she will need to learn how to take care the dog first.

In the mean time, she can always climb a tree. The same old tree she has been clibming since she was three. :)

Busy Busy Busy

I am seriously missing the days that I can go to the gym for two hours in the morning.. followed by a hour at a coffee shop reading whatever. Play with my pictures during the day. Go get kids in the afternoon.. Then, if I am in the mood, back to the gym again.

We really can't win. Now I am working on two jobs for two wonderful companies. But, I am thinking it would be nice if I can get laid off again.. just for two months because the holidays is coming.

Allison's teacher called a parents conference this morning. Our little girl is doing great at school, so good that her teacher wants to have her tested for gifted program. We want to wait for few more months. What we also found out is that she reads reads.. and has already mastered sign words all the way to 2nd grade, but she may not know what they mean.. But we are really proud what she has done so far, just keep on reading Allison. And, I also found out she tells her teacher everything.. such as "if you finish reading 20 books this week, I will give you a pack of gum and we can all get a free pizza from school." Ooops. I shouldn't have said that especially if I knew she is going to tell her teacher.

It is easy to miss her in a crowd because she is so small and so quiet, but she is growing up so fast mentally that I want her to slow down because I am not ready yet. We have never discussed adoption in details with her, but out of nowhere last night, she told she that I am her "regular" mom and she also have a birth mom in China, and maybe she is having another baby, then she said "maybe she doesn't want me so she can have another baby." I was completed in shock because I have never mentioned the word "birth mom" to her before. Only thing I can think of is that Allison reads so much, she must have read one of our adoption books and got it on her own.

I told her that she is lucky because she has two moms and they both love her very much.. Our conversation continued this morning on the way to the school bus stop. I promised her that I will tell her the whole story what's her life is like back in China.. with pictures. Thank God I have this blog.

A Skating Party

We are not into birthday parties. Actually our kids haven never had a big birthday party. On their birthday, we go out to a restaurant at their choice and celebrate as a family. And I normally take them out for a little shopping trip to pick out their birthday presents. But on this weekend, I made Kelly to go to one of her classmates birthday celebration.. A classmate she hasn't met yet.

I could write a long story about this little girl.. but it is not my story to tell. But I do want to say this little girl is an inspiration to me.

She has been very very sick and has gone through some major procedures, so I was totally surprised when I first saw her. She bounded off the skating rink, jumped right in front of me wearing a cute hat and sparkling purple shirt, and introduced herself to me and Kelly.

Kelly was really taken by her. Two of them quickly ran off to play and I watched Kelly asked a lot questions. This is exactly why I want Kelly to come to the party. It is a celebration, not only a birthday, but 100th days free of her sickness, and looking forward to going back to school.

I keep thinking about this little girl I just met and wondering if I could handle what she went through to get to this point. I want Kelly to learn that life is not always easy, but you just can't give up. You have to keep trying. That's a lesson for all of us.

Sunday Snapshot - Life's Beach .. Again

It is a cool 60 degree Sunday morning. Fall has officially arrived..finally. I am sure it is going to be 80s in the afternoon, but as least for now, it feels like fall. Allison is asking that when the leaves are going to change color. This is her first summer in Florida, she doesn't know that there is no season changes here.

We are at the beach again.. This is the one thing I really love about Florida, the beaches. The warm ocean water and white sand.. Florida has some best beaches in the world.

Hi Mom.. look over here. This is really the best time of the year. Tourists are mostly gone because the school has started. You see a lot Europeans and large group of older ladies gathering at the beach for some kind of reunion. So, the girls had the pool all for themselves most times.

Only thing Kelly will never complain about the Florida is the swimming.. She lives in the pool

Allison Organizes A Play Date

Everyday I was reminded Allison is getting more confident and outgoing. She is now a very good friend of a little girl, Samantha who rides school bus with her everyday morning and afternoon. They get on the bus at the same spot, sit side by side every ride. Really cute together. And, they both want a play date this weekend. I said OK. Kelly has a play date at her best friend's house, so I invited Samantha to come to our house for the play date. This was the first time Allison hosts a play date for her friends.

It was really funny to watch how Allison entertained her friends. Samantha's brother also came over. Allison was very excited, almost too excited. She tried to arrange everything, watch movies, play in sandbox, toys, snacks,draw pictures.. and she was very loud. I had to remind her to calm down because she was scaring her friends. We have never seen her like that. There was no break in between. I watched her bouncing from one room to anther.. nonstop talking.. I couldn't stop laughing.

Allison was having a great time until her big sister came home. The ever dominating Kelly quickly got the kids attention, and Allison was not happy about that. I had to pull Kelly to the side so Allison can enjoy her experience.. By the end of the day, Allison said.."Mom, it was a great play date. Next time, we are going to Samantha's house. Then, we will come back to our house again." She has everything figured out.. :)

A Hurricane In Maine

Our family is from Florida so we know hurricane really well. Our home insurance has been shooting to the roof in the recent years because of it. But we have never thought a hurricane will hit the coast of Maine, but it did this year.

We did all we can in this kind of situation. Took all our yard furniture back in. Boat out of the water. Then, we decided to take a trip to the beach.. and play.. and watch the waves

The differences between Florida and the beaches in Maine are water temperature and quality of the sand. You can sleep on the beach in Florida if you want.. but not in Maine. The water is cold, the sand is cold, and most coastline are rocky.. they are beautiful in a different way.. more dramatic than romantic.

Girls are not big fan of swimming in the cold Maine ocean especially Kelly. Last year she went to a summer camp and spent most of her time on the beach.. and she didn't like it. But they both enjoy exploring the beaches..

Well, back to the hurricane. The wave was high, but not high enough to create excitement. We did have a good time relax on the beach, and girls explored the rocky beach and found bunch sea animals.. big and small, live or dead.

Kids Funny - About The Gym

Exercise is a big part of my life since college and kids know that, and they sure know how to use it too.

Both girls are grounded this week for hitting each other on Sunday. No TV for the whole week. On Monday, Allison wanted to watch TV after school, I reminded her that she is grounded for hitting her sister. She said.. "Oh..OK." Then later, she asked.."Mommy, are you going to the gym this afternoon?" "Going to gym is good for you, isn't it? So, you don't get fat." I said "Yes, of course. I am going to the gym." As soon as I dropped them off at the kids club at my gym, they claimed.. "We can watch TV here, right? You said we couldn't watch TV at home, but we can watch it here, right?"

I have to say they got me. I was surprised, but then agreed. Five days without TV is going to be hard on them and me too.. so I decided to let this one go.. and thinking I should be smarter next time.

Kelly is really into trading Pokemon trading cards those days. She asked me today after school if I could take her to Walmart to get a pack Pokemon cards. I told her I am not going to spend $15 on trading cards, she said she is going to pay with her own money. Oh well.. she does have her own resources and we agreed that's what's the money is for.. when she is really want something and mommy and daddy are not going to buy for her.

I asked her if we could go to the gym first before going to Walmart because I didn't want to miss my spinning class. Kelly said.. "Mom, you go to gym everyday. It doesn't matter you miss one class. Plus, you are not fat, not skinny, you look just perfect. You don't really need to go to the gym." Well, guess what, we went to Walmart first.

The girls reminded me last night that today is the first day of the Fall.. they wanted to know when are we going to go pick apples and road trips for leaf watching. I had to remind them we are not in Maine this year, so not sure if we can make those trips in always green Florida. But, we will always have those pictures as memories. Maybe next year.. just maybe.

Can I Have The Free Lunch?

I had mixed feelings when Kelly got moved to a different school. We are zoned for one of the best public school in Florida with great teachers. The new school is different in many ways. It has much more diverse student population, and more than half kids are on lunch plan.

I ask her everyday how does she like her new school and new friends. She always says she loves it. I went to her school to have lunch with her and saw how relax and easy she is with her new friends. The kids are all wonderful. They are definitely more grounded and tough, but very friendly.

Couple days ago when I went to school to have lunch with Kelly again, all the kids at the table offered to get some food for me.. "Mrs. Piper, the food is free. Seriously, it is free." Then Kelly asked me if she could have the free lunch at school. When I told her she cannot have the free lunch, she has to pay for it. She thought that's unfair.

Yesterday when she came home and told me she had the free breakfast at school.. when I told her that her breakfast was not free, she has an account with the school, and she paid her breakfast. She doesn't understand why many of her friends can have free lunch but not her.

I tried to explain to her that not everyone has enough money to buy lunch, some kids parents don't make enough money, so the school let them eat lunch free. I don't think Kelly fully understands the concept, but I am glad that she knows some of her friends don't have as much as she does. Now I am thinking this little detour to a different school can help her become more compassionate, because today she came home and told me all her food and snacks were gone, she shared them with all her friends.. she even shared her candies.

Sunday Snapshot - Life's Beach

This has been an eventful summer, and things are changing really fast. Kids are growing up.. especially Allison. Everyday I see a new side of her and wonder what happened to that little shy girl that doesn't speak to anyone she doesn't know. Biggest challenge for Kelly right now is the weather. She still doesn't like the Florida weather and let me know about it everyday.. I hope things will be better for her next summer.

This weekend, I took the girls to our favorite St. Pete beach resort. It was a typical Florida summer day.. hot, humid.. and hot. Kelly announced that she doesn't want to do anything outside.. not even to the pool because it is just, well, you guess it.. too hot for her. So, I booked a book on the beach front. I figured if we have to stuck in the room, at least we will have the view.

It turned out to be a good decision. When the sun was going down, we went to the beach, and girls had a great time building sand castles..

I did get Kelly to go down to the pool and she had a great time..

This is the sunset view from our room. I love the beach front room.. After sun went down, I sat in our balcony with a glass of wine and watching the actions on the beach.

When the heat cools off, Kelly comes back to life..

Trying Out Advanced Reading

I probably have mentioned many times that Allison loves to read. Kindergarten is fun. She is slowly coming out of her shell. What I have learned is that kids are all different. Like her sister, a highly intelligent gifted student, but does not like to read.. or I should say very picky about what to read. Kelly has never been interested in fairy tales.. but loves books about animals. Allison, on the other hand, loves any book you put in front of her.

We didn't really put too much effort into Allison's reading at the beginning, she did it all on her own. She loves leapfrog DVD about letters.. watched every morning before daycare for about a month. Then one day, she picked out a book and started to sound out words and she was four years old.

Then she moved to Leapfrog DVD about reading.. watched it again and again.. then she started to read. Quickly graduated from Bob's little books.. and moved into her sister's books. Now, at the beginning of her Kindergarten year, she is reading at level 2 or 3. What is amazing is not only she read, but her understanding of the content. She will read a book, then play a teacher/student game and ask questions about the book. Her comprehension is really amazing for a kid her age.

Allison loves to visit the library, and we always come home with lots books. Even thorough she can read chapter books now, I have been very careful not to let her move too fast because I want her to enjoy reading. Whenever we are at the library, I always want her to pick out books with illustrations. Sometimes she will pick out a really cute popup books just so she can play student/teacher game. When she reads, she always reads out loud.

So this week after seeing what she has been doing in her kindergarten classroom, tracing letters and learning simple sentences, I asked her teacher if Allison can be put on Advanced Reading program to earn points. I know they don't normally put a kindergartener in the program, but I wanted to try. To my surprise, the teacher agreed to let her take the placement test, if she does well, she will be in the program. She took the test yesterday and told me it was very easy.. so I am hopeful that she will start the program in couple weeks. Who knows, this little cutie probably will surprise us again.. soon.

Another Milestone

This big school bus has always been a misery to Kelly. When she started Kindergarten couple years ago, she was so excited about riding the bus. When the day came, she and I waited for the bus to come and she was beyond herself that she is going to be a big girl that rides a bus to school. Then the bus came, this hug bus with loud noise stopped in front of her, she looked at me and started to cry.. "I don't want to ride the bus." That's the end of the bus story. We tried again couple times, she didn't want to ride the bus. So this year, when she is assigned to go to a different school, it was impossible to send both girls to school on time without leaving really early. I asked her if she wanted to try the bus, to my surprise, she said yes. I followed her bus the first day, she was fine. Later she told me she doesn't want me to follow her again.. and she wants to ride the bus home.. That makes us so happy.

The bus stops right next to our house, and we can see when the bus comes.

We didn't plan to let Allison ride the bus, but she insists. She wants to ride the bus, and she was not joking. She wants to ride the bus to school and come back on the bus too. I guess it is easier when you have a big sister does it. So, next week, she will skip the extended care and come back on the bus also.

Girls are all growing up.. too quickly.

What A Week!

We are indeed back in Florida right now. This is the first time in 8 years we are back in September. Kelly started a new school on Tuesday. To our surprise, Kelly handled the school much better than she does with the weather. She goes with the flow, loves the teachers, made new friends. Transportation is a challenge because Allison goes to a different school, and both of them need to be at the school the same time. I asked Kelly if she wants to try the school bus, to my surprise, she agreed and loved it..for now. We are hoping if she can take the school bus, so we can keep them in two separate school. Otherwise, we may have to transfer Allison to the same school with Kelly.

Kelly still is having a hard time adjusting the heat. As tough as she is, she is not a hot weather girl. Everyday is a struggle for her. She cannot breath. Always has an ice water in her hand. Will not go outside unless going into the water. It reminds me of my first year moving to Florida. I was so miserable that I ran away to escape the heat. Kelly asks everyday if we could go back to Maine.. "Kelly, but your school is here." "Mom, we got a good school in Maine too." Good point. We are still discussing it. In the mean time, I am praying for the weather to cool down.

Allison is doing really well. Heat doesn't bother her. She loves her school. Because she was in a private school last year, she is able to keep up with her class even through she is three week late to attend the class. She is also more mature.. still a pin size girl with a big personality. Loves to read and loves to study. One thing makes us really happy is two girls are good friends now. They still fight sometimes, but are getting along so much better.

This weekend, we decided to head to the beach. This is the one thing makes us love Florida the most.. the beach. The weather was not ideal.. as soon as we got to the beach, it started raining. But girls still did some swimming and we took a long walk at the beach.

Like a typical Florida raining afternoon, half the sky is clear and half is cloudy, and the color of the ocean reflects that.

Kelly is a happy at the beach.. she loves the beach, ocean, and the pool. I am happy to see her back in her element..

She is also happy to let me take her pictures those days and she is quite a model..

It Is SOOOOO Hot

Kelly and I came back to Florida yesterday morning.Our summer was being cut short this year due to the changes in Florida school system. It was a total surprise for us and we were not prepared for it. We came back early so Allison can enroll in the school and we will be only dealing with the school situation with Kelly. To my surprise, Kelly was not upset that she couldn't go to the same school with her friends, but she is bothered by the heat. First thing she said when we arrived the Florida was.. "Mom, it is really hot here." Then today, she will not go outside the house for more than five minutes because it is sooooo hot.

Of course. like any places you live, there are upside of living in Florida, the water. Our pool is not ready yet, so we took the girls to our favorite hotel.. and they both jumped into the pool and swam their heart out.

There is no more complaining about the cold water.. just jump in. We are looking forward to the beach next weekend.

Both girls got a new bike. Well, Kelly got a new upgraded 20in bike while Allison got Kelly's bike. Girls spent two days at the community party swimming and playing with friends.

Allison wants to go out biking every chance she gets. She loves her "new" bike.

They agree to let me take some pictures as long as it is indoor..It reminds me of my first year in Florida.. It was very hot and I was having a very hard time to adjust to it.

Comments From A Kindergartener

Allison started kindergarten this week. Daddy said she has been crashing out at 7:30pm every night.. yeahhh for kindergarten. No more late night for this little cutie. I called her everyday to ask her about her day.. and I heard some pretty cute comments..

How's your day, Allison?
"It was fine. Nothing special. Just another day."

Did you read books at school today?
"No, we are not allowed to read books. My teacher does it. She told us just to look at pictures."
But Allison you can tell her that you already read chapter books now.
"No. I don't need to tell her that. It is not her business to know how good I can read. I do it myself."
Hmmm.. not sure I follow that.

Allison, who did you play with today?
"My friend Reilly. I knew him from my pre-school. We are friends now. Oh mom, maybe he can be my boyfriend."
Oh.. my..

Allison, do you have homework today?
"Yes, I do."
Why are you watching TV not doing your homework?
"Because I finished it already. It was very easy, mom. Not like our home-school homework. Kindergarten is easy."

She Is A Kindergartner!

I am thinking about this cutie tonight. She is on her way back to Florida with daddy. Tomorrow she will be a kindergartner. It is a long story that we have to cut the summer short due to some changes in Florida school system. I watched her got in the car with daddy with her suitcase and backpack. She suddenly is a big girl now..

I felt bad that I couldn't be there with her. I am sure daddy will do a great job to get her started. I can't wait to hear her first day as a kindergartner tomorrow.

Goodbye Mira

Summer is quickly coming to the end.. It seem like yesterday that we met Mira and hired her to tutor the girls for the summer. She spend six hours with them everyday doing study and play games. Girls adore her. Allison calls her Mommy Mira. She is beautiful and wonderful with the girls..

Growing Up Kelly

In about one week, she is going to enter 2nd grade. She has grown up a lot this summer. Still confident, athletic, and goofy. She is becoming more and more independent. Couple weeks ago, we took a trip to a local amusement park, at 50" tall, she is qualified to ride most ride by herself.. and she did just that.

Her school in Florida started already. She missed her friends. I am struggling if we should go back to Florida sooner next summer so she can start the school with her friends at the same time. As much as she doesn't like to study at home, she loves school. While we were studying at the library today, she asked.."When can we go back to school and study with a real teacher?"

She has mastered the posing for the camera, and she can be really professional about ti when she wants it..

Her most recent obsession is acting. She loves to use my cell phone and makes home movies. I wish you could see them. She is always funny and creative.

Still crazy about creating her own things. Most recent project, a sailboat with pink bottom. She took it to the ocean for a test ride, and it came back undamaged. She is really proud.

Just like that.. she has becoming an independent young lady. Time sure goes fast!

A Beautiful Summer Week In Michigan.

Last month, girls and I took a road trip to Michigan to visit our Michigan relatives. Michigan is a place close to Alex's heart. He was born in Michigan, grew up and went to school there. He was accepted by both MIT and University of Michigan, he picked Michigan. So, it was not hard to convince always busy Alex to come out for the weekend also.

We had a wonderful time with the Michigan Pipers. Girls had a ball playing with their cousins. I didn't see them most of the time..and they hardly came to look for me either.

Diana took us to visit a children's garden.. and it was unbelievably beautiful.

If you were Kelly, you want to climb a tree.. a big tree.. in a dress.

Or try to catch a butterfly..

Or go fishing even thorough you had never caught a single fish by living on the water half the year..

And make new friends.. it is amazing to me how easy kids can make friends. Only if we can all learn something from them.

It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything.. the important thing is to have fun..

Then Alex came, more fun started.. we went to visit the island he grew up.. the house his parents built.. and this is the place they used to come for ice cream. Hard to image how they sell ice cream here..but it was many years ago.

Here they are again.. not boys anymore. They used to cross the river to Canada to buy firecrackers.. It must be very easy to cross the border back then. I don't think their mom knew about it..

We took a walk on the University of Michigan campus. Alex spent countless hours at the engineering building behind him.. just like his dad did. If Kelly is smart enough, maybe she can come here also. May not be in the same building.. do they have a degree in public relations?

We had a such lovely time.. thanks to Andy, Diana, and kids for hosting us. We want to come again!

It is not everyday you can board a million dollar boat.. when we heard about the boat building exhibition in Rockland, we decided to check it out.

Deep sea fishing boat own by a classy lady. Kelly was the only one climbed up to the high deck.

Of course, kids want to check out everything especially Kelly.

It was amazing to see a group of kids to start building a boat and boat and few hours later, it was in the water. Only in Maine.

Lobster Dinner

We are hosting friends from Orlando this week. Girls are very happy to have their friends from Florida here. To celebrate, we decided to pick some lobsters for dinner. It is a Maine thing..

First you go to a lobster pound and pick one out. Today's price is 4.50 per pound, if you are from Maine, you never go to get your lobsters from a store or a restaurant.

Then, you discuss with your friend if this is the one you like.

If you are a kid, you want to play with it see if he can be your friend.. for now.

Then it is mommy's turn to pick out a one.. a bigger one.

Once get home, there is always a kid wants to set them free.. "Go, go, before my mom put you in the oven."

Kids always think lobsters can be good pet. They are not. You have to be very careful with them.

"Kelly, do you think I can bring couple of them back to Florida?"

"Are you sure you don't want to leave? Last chance, mommy is on her way out here to get you."

It cracked me up to hear Maddie saying.."Bye bye.. have fun on the way to the oven."

In the end, everyone was happy to have the yummy lobsters for dinner.

The Incredible Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls are the most powerful waterfalls in North America. These voluminous waterfalls forms the internatinoal border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the state of New York. According to the Niagara Falls park infomration, the falls are 17 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Buffalo, New York and 75 miles (121 km) south-southeast of Toronto, Ontario, between the twin cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York. Not the biggest in the world, but certaily the most powerful one.

We got really lucky to be able to get a room at Marriott facing the Falls. The hotel is on the canadian side so we have to cross the border to our hotel. I also learned that you have to have a paper from your spouse to say that it is OK for you to take your children cross the border.We were held at the boarder for all kind of questions because I didn't have the paper. Finally the Canadian officer turned to Allison, who was a bit crazy after 10 hours car ride..

"Allison, who lives in your house?"
"Well, my mom."
"Who else Allison?"
"My dad.." Thank God she said both mom and dad. She thought the questions were funny so she couldn't stop laughing.
"Are you sure? No cats, elephants.. "
More giggling.. "You are silly.. no elephants."

We saw the rainbow everyday from our hotel room. It was really a treat. One of the most powerful and beautiful sight.

Maid of Mist ride is an experience you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else..

We also went behind the fall to get really close. Allison was too scared so she didn't come out.

The falls are so powerful.. They supplies the electricity all the way to the cities like Chicago and Detroit.

This has been a very busy summer.. and it is going really fast. Girls have been studying hard whole summer. I have decided to let them relax for couple weeks in their last month of the summer. Both are enrolled at an art camp. We took a long walk at the beach and girls.. collect rocks and shells.

As I was looking at those pictures, I could help but thinking my baby is growing into a graceful young lady..

It Is Summer!

I am way way behind my blogging. I blame it on the summer. Lots have happened. There are so many events I couldn't keep up. Early July, I suddently found myself have a lot time in my hands due to the job siutation.. instead of jumping back to work, I decided to take couple months off just to enjoy the summer. I have always wanted to take the summer off, take some road trips, go visit family and friends.. Play with kids or just sit by the ocean reading a book. That's exactly what I am doing.. enjoy the summer with the girls. We took two road trips so far.. one to the Virgina Beach to see her China sisters. For some reason, Allison doesn't want to know those girls. She didn't talk to anyone except her best friend Sammy. I have decided this type of reunion is not for her. She doesn't build relationship in two days.. she needs two months. So, we are not going to do it again next year. The other trip we made was to Niagara Falls and Michigan. We all had a blast. Daddy even made it out there.. it was the best trip ever. Long drive. And, plenty things we did locally..

Water fun..
This summer we joined YMCA.. and girls have been swimming a lot. Both can swim like a fish now. At YMCA, they wouldn't let Allison swim by herself.."You need to be in the water with her so you can save her when something happens." What they don't know,, she is a better swim than me.

And, there are always Portland water fun

Allison is growing this summer. She is always hungry and she eats a lot. Her pants is smaller.She is taller. She has also decided that she is going to be a climber. So, she climbs everywhere we go.

What about Kelly? She is growing.. then she decided she is done. She is not eating. I can't make her eat. But,like they say, they will eat when they are hungry. She started Karate this summer and she loves it.

She loves to be outside.. who can blame her. It is summer. Best time in Maine. We have several boat trips planned as soon as I am back from Europe.

The girls are getting along very well.. I guess they spend so much time together, they have to figure out a way to play together. Both did wonderfully on the road trip. There were very little fighting or aruging.

We are thinking maybe they are on their way to become best friends.. well, maybe not so fast.

We are all enjoying the beautiful summer here in Maine. I am heading to Prague for a week then Kelly's best friend family is coming to visit. I would love to take another trip to Quebec city.. maybe China? This could be the best summer ever.

Sunday Snapshot - Strawberry Picking

It is a glorious summer day in Maine. Warm sun and cool air. Every time I go outside I remind myself that how lucky we are to be able to spend the summer here. For this weekend, we headed out to a strawberry farm for some berry fun.

The farmers had a really good. We picked some really tasty strawberries..

Allison is a very smart picker. She spent half of her time picking, the other half following daddy while eating strawberries.

Kelly is a picky picker.. she only wants big ones and no one can touch her bucket.

The Karate Kid

We again hired a tutor/nanny this summer for the girls, and we decided to let Allison stay home with Kelly. Instead of going to camp every week, girls study every morning for few hours, then go out to play. I did, however, signed Allison up for a week art camp, and Kelly will go to the farm camp for a week and a sports camp for another week. One thing Kelly has been asking for is to learn karate. I wasn't sure if she will like it since she is very girlie and likes to dance, but decided to let her try it out. And this is our first karate class..

Not sure what to do when we first came in.. they don't have uniform of her size..

Let's go over some basic steps.. she is confused.

It became much easier when she started to follow all the moves. She is a physical girl.I also learned that karate is a lot like kickboxing except there are a lot Japanese mixed in it. So, Kelly and I are going to do some kickboxing later. She didn't want to leave after her class was over.. She loves it.

Happy 4th July - A Small Town Celebration

4th July has a lot special meanings for many people, especially for people who services this country.

Our town 4th July parade is like any other small town.. it is like a family affair

And the proud flag ladies. They stand on street every Tuesday to remind people to love our country.. and on every Saturday, they host a yard sale.

A tradition started many many years ago.. and they are still going

Here comes our neighbor and his chocolate candies. Kelly and daddy were supposed to join them, but miss the truck.

And two very serious looking little girls.. one day they will appreciate the meaning of 4th July better.

Sunday Snapshot - The Fun Of Hiking

Our family loves hiking.. Kelly has been going hiking with us since 3 years old. Bradburry is our favorite local hike. The trail is perfect for our kids. we also have our annual trip to the Rattlesnake mountain every year. Last year, we expanded to Camden and Greenville areas. We tried Mount Battle and Golf Hagas. They are spectacular hiking trails, but unfortunately girls were too young to handle them. This weekend, we decided to try Grafton Notch State Park.. not only for its beautiful waterfalls, but also the hikes. To our surprise, both girls made to the summit.. a 2.5 miles hike with 900′ elevation gain to the top. This is not a walk in the park hike, they are actually pretty tough hikes and both handled so well especially Allison. View from the top is just spectacular. You couldn't help but feel the great achievement.

It doesn't look like they are going to start a 2.5 miles hike in the mountain.. isn't it. People were commenting about their dresses. Those girls do everything in a dress.

The trail started to elevate as soon as we got on it.. And they both were up to the challenge. Doesn't matter we got up at 7:00am, and doesn't matter we already hiked about a mile along the water falls.

Stop along way to discover.. You can always find something new if you look.

No matter what people say.. I think she looks really cool in her dress on the trail.

Daddy's strategy is that you need to keep going in the same pace.. Girls want to take breaks.. to rest or play.

One of Kelly's source of energy is cool mountain creek water.. Daddy said they taste really good and cool.

Allison was right there with us every step. She did better than her sister. We think because she is so close to the ground.. it doesn't take as much energy for her to keep up with us. We are so proud of her and we are thinking next hike will be Mount Battle, the one that they didn't make it last year.

Another Pearl of Maine - Grafton Notch Water Falls

Grafton Notch is a notch. A short distance from Bethal, Grafton Notch State Park is really a total pleasant surprise for our weekend outing. Whether you want to go sightseeing or just want to get away, this is a perfect place especially if you have kids.

But we started the day with visiting water falls. Screw Auger Falls is one of the most visited falls in Maine. To our delight, it was just a short walk off route 26 but with specular views. Also equally beautiful is the Mother Walker Falls is more than 40 feet deep and 980 feet long.

Leading up to the fall is a beautiful river runs through..

Girls found a frog on the bottom of the fall..

And many tadpoles... One of the pleasure going to the nature is to discover and both kids love to do so.

We made a bet that before the day ends, Kelly will be socked.. She jumped across the rocks and walked on slippery surfaces. When the day ends, she didn't get socked. Mom did.. but the camera was saved.

Kelly helped her sister walking on the rocks along the fall.

Then we discovered the butterflies.. hundreds of them.

I don't know the ego system here, but those butterflies are not afraid of people. Both girls were able to have them landed on their hands.. and Kelly thought they may like wild strawberries.

We didn't finish all the water falls.. give us good reason to come back. I image when the fall comes, the park will be filled with magic colors.

Going For The Ride..

It didn't take long for the girls to go on the boat ride.. actually as soon as daddy came back from his test ride, they wanted to be on it. They figured, since daddy is back, the boat must be good.

Allison is waiting for daddy to come back.. I think I can see a blue boat, that must be him.

The boat sure looks really small on the big ocean.. but really quiet.

There goes all my families.. I was praying for the calm water and no wind.

Kelly is always willing to help.. and has no problem asking to get paid.

I asked Allison later was it fun.. "It was a lot fun, except daddy had to clean the seaweed.. so we had to stop a lot. But when it was moving, it was fun." And very quiet.

Our next door summer renter asked me last night.."What kind of boat is it? It moves really fast, but you couldn't hear a thing." That's exactly what daddy wanted!

Daddy's Another Baby - His Electric Boat

It is all started couple years ago.. we decided to have a boat. So, what kind of boat? Daddy is a green person. He doesn't like noise and he doesn't like pollution. So, big energy boat was out. Sailboat would be great only problem is the girls are still too young to get on a sail boat.. Daddy wants a boat that is quiet and not too big, and can take the family to the harbor for lobster or ice cream. Well, since he can't find a boat like that, he decided to build an electric boat.. that runs on battery. I am not joking.. He quietly developed his idea of the boat, bought a sailboat while we were in Florida couple summer ago and had someone delivered to Maine, then couple months later, there were toys shipped from China, some bought from fleet market.. collected hundreds milk bottles.. many things from eBay.. No one thought he is serious about this. When we arrived in Maine last summer, there was a beautiful blue sailboat sitting in our yard.. two days later, all parts were gone, only have a empty blue body.. then daddy started his project.

This was last summer.. deep into the project. He will stand there .. just think.. think.. think

Many times kids were drafted to help.. even girls tutor from last summer was hired to do some work. People joked with him all the times about this blue boat that one day going to be in the water..and runs on battery.. oh.. with hundred empty milk bottles under there.. So, when last week, daddy announced that the boat was ready for the water, no one wanted to be on the boat with him. But we all cheered.. and hoping the boat will float.

Yesterday, out of blue, daddy said, "It is time, the boat is going into the water." Our neighbor graciously offered to help him. It requires a real Mainer to do a job like that.

Armed with my best camera, I followed them to the end of the point.. not sure what to expect, just hoping the boat will float.

This guy is extremely smart.. and persistent.. and funny too. A very happy man. His baby is ready.

It is going in..

Honey, is it too late trying to figure how remote control works.. Yeap, the boat can be controlled by a remote control for toys that made in China.

Girls are wondering if daddy will be able to make it.. still no one wants to get on that boat with him.

Just like that.. daddy went to the big ocean with his baby.. beautifully and quietly. He did have to work hard to get seaweed out of his way.. but there he went.. and after making sure he had his cell phone and a peddle. We went home and prayed..

The Way Life Should Be

My love affair with Maine goes back to many years ago.. in my last life. One hot summer weekend while I was working in Maryland, I took a weekend trip to Boston and got stuck at the Logan airport. So, I decided to go somewhere else, and picked Bar Harbor Maine. If I had seen the plane that was going to Bar Harbor, I wouldn't have picked Bar Harbor. By the time of the boarding, I was terrified that I was going to a strange place in the middle of the ocean on a tiny plane sits 13 people. I did went.. and terrified most of the way there looking down at the beautiful ocean.. nothing but water. Once I arrived in Maine, like many people who have visited here, I completed fall in love with this beautiful state. There is no place like Maine. Then I started to come every year, brought my boyfriend here while we were dating, got married in Bar Harbor, bought a house here.. I do, however, will never got on a tiny plane again. I rather drive from Bangor.

Then kids came. Life become really busy, but we also found many places and fun activities to do with kids. Our recent obsession is hiking. It was a total surprise to me because I don't do many outdoor activities..

Allison learned to climb on Piper rocks. What else can she do to keep up with daddy and Kelly.

You know you are not in Florida anymore when normal weekend activities involves animals.. not just beaches.

No baby.. not yet. One more year, you will be qualify for L.L.Bean pedding school.

Right now, we prefer you go hiking with us.. while the air is fresh.. sun is warm.. and we just love to enjoy everything Maine has to offer.

There is always beauty no matter where you look...

That's how we learn and discover.

And learning is always fun no matter where you are.

We love the life in Maine.. It hasn't been easy with girls school arrangement. But, weare working hard to keep them ahead of the age group. This summer is no exception.

Here is Kelly with their summer tutor. They study every morning learning math and reading. In the afternoon, they go out to explore the field, the beach, and the sea. It is a wonderful life.. the way life should be here in Maine.

Sunday Snapshot: A Pirate Rendezvous

This weekend is Damariscotta pirate rendezvous event. We went to the event couple years ago and it was a lot fun. You watch the pirates sail into the beautiful Damariscotta harbor and try to take over the town. There are games, music and performance. It is a great family event including piracy and all kinds of activities. This is also our first summer road trip.. so everyone was very excited. Most of our road trips take place in Maine, and this year is no exception. We have many planned and are looking forward to sailing on the ocean and hiking in the mountains..

The trip to Damariscotta is always exciting.. we normally keep on going to the Pemaquid lighthouse which I think is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in Maine. But it started to rain so we decided to come back again another time.. But it was a wonderful day with lots games, food, and pirates.. until next year.

One Beautiful Day In Maine

Life is finally back to normal now. It didn't take long for all the birdies find their way back to the bird feeder. I made a trip to the harbor fish market today and came home with lots fresh seafood.

We had a nice rain last night.. and it is a perfect summer day. While walking outside, I noticed flowers.. lots of them.. all bright and beautiful.

And even those not ready to bloom yet.. still beautiful

Small but amazingly delicate

Tonight daddy was testing his electrical boat.. It is a project he started last summer. The boat is ready.. just going through series of testing right now. I think Kelly can be an engineer like daddy when she grows up. Two of them had a lot fun testing the boat.

My beautiful and silly girl has so much energy that I can't keep up with her. After studying with a tutor for hours today.. she came with me to the gym and we played basketball.. After gym, she wanted to play badminton.. then she wanted bike ride after badminton. Daddy went with her. They crashed a Friday evening dance party and didn't come home until 10pm.

Ready for the bike ride.. I didn't see Kelly again until very late.

More flowers.. did I mention they are everywhere?

Allison doesn't have the energy like her sister.. I walked with her. We took pictures of more flowers.. and her

Allison loves the new nanny that we just hired this week. Myra is a college student who was also adopted by her parents when she was a baby. Girls studied math and reading with Myra in the morning.. played on the beach in the afternoon. Allison has decided no summer camp for her, she wants to stay home.. be "home schooled". I don't know where she learned that term. She is a smart one.

Black & White Wednesday - Their Beach And Rocks

Since school is not out yet here in Maine. Both girls are home right now. We thought they should be OK since they can play together so we didn't make nanny arrangement. After three days, we gave up. While the weather has been absolutely perfect.. all they want to do is to go outside play especially want to go down to the beach. Knowing we cannot let them go by themselves.. and we cannot have girls calling mommy every five minutes.. we hired a nanny. Starting tomorrow. Now, they can spent a lot time on the beach if they want..

We are lucky to have a beach here and girls love to explore. Today, they found tons horseshoe crabs swimming close to the shore. Kelly picked one up..and I am glad she let it back to the water shortly.

Forever brave and naturally athletic Kelly never takes easy way. She loves to climb on those rocks since she was three years old. People always ask us why we let her do it.. It is not up to us. She does it no matter what you say. So, instead of telling her not to do it, daddy taught her how to do it correctly since she was a baby. She grow up on those rocks.

I used to be really nervous about it.. now I know she can handle it..

It does look dangerous sometimes.. but she handles it really well. This girl has tremendous balance ability.

Allison is not allowed to climb those rocks..but she does enjoy jumping across them on the bottom.

Exploring our beach is one of their favorite activities here in Maine.

I think the water is too cold.. so does she because we are all Florida fishes.

By the end of the day, whatever they found on the beach will always go back to the ocean.

Hello Maine!

Many people think we are crazy to move twice a year. But it is really not a big deal once you have done it many times. Most the stuff we are transporting are kids clothes. But it does take couple days to get everything work right in a house that has been empty for seven months. You also don't know who had been in the house while you are gone.. Very often we find rice or dry pasta under a pillow. That's a sign some small animals were here while we were gone.

This year we decided to take the auto train from Sanford to Lorton and then drive up to Maine. The train ride was a blast, but can't say the same about the driving part. We had a GPS malfunction and it took us to the heart of Washington DC. It took us almost a hour to figure out how to get back on track.. Then the traffic was bad on 95 passing all major cities. We finally decided to escape 95, took a longer route going to 87 and 84 back to Maine. It was long but very nice ride with hardly any traffic. Needless to say everyone was very tired when we got home.

Maine is beautiful as always. Friends told me it was raining whole month of May. But it has been beautiful ever since we arrived.

It didn't take long for daddy to walk into the woods..

First thing first, daddy put the play set back together. Allison is trying to fly .. as high as she can

Kelly is very happy to find that the fairy house she built last fall is still there.. behind a big tree.

Bleeding heart.. my favorite flower. They are so dramatic yet very delicate and beautiful.

This year, daddy outsourced garden work. So as soon as we arrived, he is back to finish his electronic boat. I heard the launch day is tomorrow. How exciting!

School is not out yet. This year, we decided to pull Allison out of her pre-school in Maine. She will go to some summer camps and do a lot home school as she calls it. Both girls are required to do one hour reading, one hour math, and write about their day in the evening. We also joined YMCA so the girls can go swim there.

We are so happy to be back in Maine... the way life should be!

Heading To Maine By Train

We are heading to Maine tomorrow.. well, today actually since it is after midnight. This year, for the first time, we have decided (well, I have decided) to take the auto train mostly because I have a car just wouldn't grow in miles. I bought my Volvo almost 10 years ago.. and it is still only has 64,000 miles on it. I work from home. Everything else is about five miles away in Orlando. So, this year, I decided to put some mileage on the car, I am taking it to Maine by auto train. The train will stop at Lorton, VA and we will drive to Maine from there.

I have done a lot research before booking the trip. And, I have convinced my DH to come with me which is a total surprise. He was not interested in a car with two chatty toddlers for 10 hours. But, he is coming.. We should see.

I checked.. there are wifi on the train. Dinner included. Wine is free.. well, I am still bring my own wine. And, kids each has their own pillow choice. It is a new experience. Not sure about my family, I am very excited. Anything new is exciting.

Life's Beach - Weekend Snapshot

There are many reasons not to have a beach getaway for the locals this weekend.. it is a holiday weekend so you know the price is high, the beach will be packed, pool will be crowded.. But then, this is our last weekend before heading to Maine so technically we are not locals. And, we know the weather would be great and kids wouldn't be lonely. So, we packed bags headed to our favorite beach resort at St. Pete Beach. We had a blast. This will last us for a whole month till out next beach vacation..:)

The hotel was full.. everyone single room was taken. Kids quickly formed friendship with some kids and disappeared in the pool..

Seems like every kid in the pool has one of those water gun and are having a great time chasing each other.

Allison spent more time jumping into the pool then swimming.. she probably did 100 jumps in two days and a gang leader for a group of kids who love to jump into the water.

Girls spent a lot time playing with the wave.. Allison even swam in the ocean for the first time with me walking along her side. She was so excited. The whole family went to explore more.. you never know what you can find out once you get out there.

Every evening, we went out to the beach to watch the sunset.. and it was not disappointing.

Well.. life's beach is not complete without a beach party.. isn't it. And those are not your normal beach parties, lots singing and dancing. We have never seen these many people here dancing to the late night. Kelly didn't want to leave. We are not sure if she should dance to "Girls just want to have fun" or Lady Gaga..

It was really a fun weekend.. we are going to miss the Florida beach. Then again, we will be back soon.

Sunday Snapshot: A Beach Party

It is a very hot summer day. High 90s. We are thinking about Maine now... two more weeks. Saturday was our annual beach party day.. lots music, lots kids, and lots food. This is a great community where we have our own park, beach, and families that love to hangout by the beach. There were so many kids running around on Saturday I finally gave up following Kelly around because it was just too hot.

Game time. "You think you can win this game?" "Yes, my name is Kelly. I want to win this game."

After several rounds of elimination, "Do you think you can still win this game?" "Yes. I can."

"Looks like you are the last kid standing here.. You just win the game."

The more delicate little Allison was not comfortable with the heat and crowd.

Another game to play.. the girls didn't win this one.

Bench under the shade tree is the best sport for her.

One thing we will sure miss about Florida is the warm water.. kids here can stay in their swimsuit whole weekend and live in the water.

Friends are the best.. She will miss her China sister.

I Broke Up With My Boyfriend

Kelly came home today announced.."I broke up with Edn. He is not my boyfriend anymore."
I asked her why.. "Because Christian kissed me today.. and Mommy, don't worry, he kissed me on my arm. He loves me. Since I can't marry two boys. So, I broke up with Edn."

Oh my.. She is seven years old.

Black & White Wednesday - Mommy's Language Coach

When Allison first came home at 18 months old, she wouldn't talk. She wouldn't talk for a long time. Then suddenly she started to talk.. and talk.. now she is a chatty box. Loud and clear. Well, that if she is comfortable with surroundings. She still wouldn't talk among people she doesn't know well.

It is clear now that this little girl is linguistically talented. Her school offers four language classes.. Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and Spanish. I don't think kids learn much about each language, but it does help them to learn how to speak and separate different sounds. I don't know Spanish or Arabic, but I have never heard any kid can speak Chinese or Japanese better than Allison. Now, she has decided she is going to correct mommy's English. Doesn't matter if I tell her that mommy will never speak perfect English. "Just try".. "There is a l in the middle, don't miss that sound".. and "There is a t at the end, you are missing it."

So, everyday, my little language coach tries to correct me if I don't say my word correctly. And, she sure has good ears, she can pick them out. Then, if mommy still doesn't get it.. she will say.. "That's ok mommy, you can say the way you say it. People will understand."

Sunday Snapshot: An Old Sanford

Sanford is one of Central Florida's oldest cities. When I first moved to Orlando, I don't know anything about Sanford other than the name. The city sits on the shore of Lake Monroe heading to St. Johns River. I have actually never wondered about where the name came from until this weekend Alex mentioned the historical museum of Sanford. So we went and I was surprised about the history about this little community. Never estimate what you see.. there are always history behind it.

Allison found alligator sample fascinating..

And Kelly wanted me to photography her on the beach..

I am always wondering if the library will disappear due to e-books. But an old fashion library sure has its charm.

We took a walk around the Sanford downtown.. reminds us about a cute arty town in Maine. Allison loves to explore those art on the wall.

And, we walked into a German restaurant with the best beer I have ever had and live music. It actually reminded me of the Germany. Who would thought in this small Florida town called Sanford.

Girls Are Grils

Silly line..but girls are so much fun especially when they love to shop. I know.. I am stereotyping, but it is true.

Friday afternoon, I went to pick them up early and asked if they want to go shopping with me. I expected Allison to say yes but Kelly wanted to go also. So, we all went to T.J.Max. Both girls picked out clothes to try on. I told them we are not buying anything that without a red sticker on. Allison was so good. She loved a Dora PJ, but not on sale. She tried it on and asked if I could buy it for her next time when it has a red sticker. I said yes. Plus, she doesn't need another PJ. And, she definitely doesn't need another pair of shoes. Well, she found a princess shoes paired with earring and a ring for $3 and she just loves it. She quickly pointed out to me that it has a big red sticker on. So, we came home with it.. Kelly found herself a pretty dress and secret notebook. Everyone was happy. We went to Macaroni Grill for dinner after shopping. And, even tried their fancy dessert. It was a fun girls night out.

She insisted on wearing the fancy princess shoes which is not practical for walking. So I asked her to bring her regular shoes also just in case. Good thing she did.

And, we had a raining afternoon so girls and I decided to make some ponytail hair tie. We got materials from Joann Fabrics this morning and Allison couldn't wait to make them.. This is my first home-made craft project. I admit I am not very domestic but it was fun to see how easy to make those and how happy girls are.

And, since they are on sale for buy one get one free, I think I have enough materials to last till the girls are in high school.

Black & White Wednesday - I Want To Be Like Kelly

Allison always wants to do what Kelly does.. Kelly is good at Roller Skate, so Allison wants to be good at it too. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the strong legs Kelly has, so it is hard for her to balance. I promised her I will help her try.. so we did. She tried, fall, laughed, got up and tried again. We had a blast. It a typical Allison fashion, she didn't give up and kept going. And I know one day she may just be better than Kelly at roll skating.

When It Is Time To Let It Go?

Today, I was shocked to know that someone I admire very much just quit her job. It is a great job and powerful one... but she decided it is time to focus on family, friends.. and other things in life that we often forgot.

I told her I hate to see her go, but admire she has the courage to let it go. She quoted this poem by Jenny Joseph.. which I love.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

It made me look at myself.. thinking what's more important. We work and we accumulate, and very often we forgot what's important. Kids grow up quickly.. we are getting old. We are always so busy in front of our computer, sometimes we ignore love ones and we don't know until it is too late.

Today I went to pick up Kelly early from her aftercare and we went shopping. Then we went pick up Allison and came home. We did math and reading together. They started to tell me about their day. How they love PE.. Kelly told me how her teacher will count 1, 2, 3 when kids wait inline to get a drink of water. I asked her if it is OK to bring her own water to school. She said yes. I wonder why haven't I ask her before.

Maybe it is time to let work go. It is time to re-evaluate...

Sunday Snapshot: The Ocean

I love the ocean .. I am not a writer so I can't really articulate the magic of the ocean on me. I love it when the ocean is calm. I love it when the ocean is wavy. Since I don't like to expose under the sun, I love to sit under cover to enjoy... everything the ocean has to offer. It slows me down and calms me especially when I have lots things in my mind. Best place for me is to sit by the water.. just chill.

We went to St. Pete for the weekend again... girls had a great time playing in the wave.. Then the sunset. I always thought what could be more romantic than sunset, sparkling ocean water and cool breezes. The beach is a wonderful place for weddings. And, there was one this weekend.

Aren't we all wish that life can be full of magic??!!

Mother's Day Rambling ... Again

I think I do this every year. Mother's day is always a struggle for me. In another word, I don't feel like to celebrate mother's day. If you think I am curl, you don't know me. I just have always have trouble with Mother's day. It has a lot to do with how I raised.

Coming home today, both girls wanted to show me what they made for Mother's day. Those are beautiful cards they did when I was out of town. They are really beautiful and I was touched.

Yesterday morning, Alex and kids asked me to guess what they got for me for Mother's day.. they said I would never guess it. I tried, none was right. I came home in the evening and told Alex I finally replaced a car part that has been bothering me for a long time. He said.. "Oh no, that is our Mother's day present for you." I was laughing but also touched. They knew what I need. That's my kind of present, practical.

You see.. Mother's day to me is a day to reflect how you are being a mother. I never thought I am a good mother. I try really hard. Work and ambition got in the way, but that's life. My mom was never there for me, she was a high power woman, she provided everything we needed but herself. I try and try. Still trying. What I know better is how my mom felt. It is hard to be a working mom.

I have accepted that I will never get mother of the year award.. but I will still try to be the best mom I can be. Hard nor not, I am still hoping that my kids and husband will slip something to me that says.."You are the best mom."

Things From The Past

I am on a business trip at Memphis today. I landed at Memphis many many years ago when I came to study here.. went to school, worked at Fedex.. have many wonderful friends here.. Love love them. Wonderful time. Lots stories funny stories.

First car. A Honda Civic. Never learned how to drive it because it is manual. It was parked in my drive way every night. Then one morning, a police showed up at the door and asked if I purposely parked the car up-side-down.. funny policeman. Some kids flipped the car over.. there goes my cute little red car I never learned to drive.

A Fun Day At The Resort

Let's see.. Beautiful palm trees, flowers, pool, water slide, and fake sandy beach. We must be at a Disney resort. We are entering the month of May. Determine to make the best of it, we went to spent Saturday afternoon at a Disney resort to play under the sun.

The 12 foot water slide is a big hit for all except Allison. She didn't want to take the chance. Kelly went again and again until her heart content.

Allison, most improved swimmer this year, swam till her heart content.

After swimming, we had a nice lunch at the resort, the walked around to explore this beautiful place..

Black & White Wednesday - For The Love Of Water

Only one month left here in Florida before heading back to Maine.. Girls has been swimming like crazy. We are having pool party every evening with jumping between hot tub and pool.

The water is not that warm according to my standard.. but doesn't matter to kids. At least it is warmer than the ocean water. I have a feeling Allison going to try swim in the ocean this year.. she has really developed the love for the water.

Because the Easter, Allison school allowed them to wear "a pretty sundress" for Good Friday.. Happy kids..

And, big sister was in the classroom to help since she had a day off and mom is the official photographer for the day. She was wonderful with little kids and they all love her.

Tiger Mom?

I have had so many people asking me if I am a tiger mom ever since Yale professor Amy Chu's article on Wall Street Journal published. I understand I fit in the stereotype.. a mom, a boring mom if you ask my kids. I am Chinese. I am a high achiever if you think three advanced degrees count.. and Education is VERY HIGH on my list..

I certainly don't think I am a tiger mom, but no one believes me. So, I finally give up and start to tell me I am a tiger mom except the part that my kids are allowed to go to the bathroom, eat food, go to a play date, sleepover, extra curriculum such as cheer leading, swimming, or learn piano.. well Allison is learning violin, but she never practices and I don't force her mostly because I can't stand that beginner noise.

I did however start to push hard on Kelly's study to make myself more like a tiger mom... I don't have to push Allison, she pushes herself. She read tons books, not just look at them, she reads out loud. She asks for math worksheets.. and proud if she gets them all correct. She gets perfect on all tests at school.. She is my perfect little tiger cub.

Now, for Kelly, who is only comfortable when she is climbing a tree, swimming in the pool, riding her bike, skating in the neighborhood, or playing with every dog she sees. For her, I setup a new rule. Every day after school, she has to either solve 30 math problems or read a story out loud. Those are not her grade level math problems, they are 2nd or 3nd grade math problems. I told her she cannot do anything until she finishes those problems.. well, except when she is hungry or needs to go to the bathroom..maybe I am a semi tiger mom?

Did it work? You bet. Kelly complains.. whines.. but she does it every day. Every day after school, I give her either a sheet of math problems, or pick out a book for her to read. I sit with her until she is done. And, she always finishes them perfectly.. She likes to stand right next to me and watch my face while I review her work.."I think I got them all right, I see a smile on your face.. did I get them all right.. did I? did I?" She always does. I will give her a high five, tell her "Now, go play." She will run to her room to put on her swimsuit, jump into the pool with a very loud..weeeeee. She is really a talented smart kid.. just need someone to push her a bit harder.. If that makes me a tiger mom.. yeap, I am a tiger mom.

And, what can I say? Allison is a perfect tiger cub.. never complains when I ask her to do work.. actually most evening, I ask her to put down her book and go to sleep. How our kids are different!

Black & White Wednesday - Am I In Trouble?

When we received Allison's paperwork, it says.."She is really good at getting herself out of trouble. If she knows she did something wrong, she will first pretend she is sad, if that doesn't work, she will try to make you laugh. And, seriously, how can you be mad at a face like that. So, most times, Ayi gave in to her."

Yesterday evening when the girls were swimming, Allison pushed Kelly. She knew she was in trouble. Daddy asked her to get out the pool have a timeout. She did, with a very sad face.

Then she started to giggle, and looking see if daddy was laughing. Daddy wasn't, she started to try harder.. and harder. It was really hilarious. They were beautiful laughs and I had to try really hard not to laugh.

Seriously.. it is really hard to be mad at a face like this.. I gave in.
